President Umaru Yar'Adua appointed him Federal Minister of Education in December 2008. Acting President Goodluck Jonathan replaced him by Ruqayyah Ahmed Rufa'i in April 2010. Egwu was former President Olusegun Obasanjo's choice to become National Chairman of the PDP at its 2008 National Convention.
